Mallorca: Tornadoes and storms on the holiday island
On the holiday island of Mallorca raging heavy thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and tornadoes. This is not uncommon on the island.
Those who dared to venture outside could experience a rare natural spectacle on Tuesday in the bay of Majorca's capital Palma: Two tornadoes were visible above the sea. But even off the coast, it has come to heavy storms.
The Spanish weather service has called the warning level red because of heavy thunderstorms and rain during the night of Wednesday. In the south of the island heavy rain flooded the streets, in the southeast it hailed violently. Several flights had to be diverted to the island of Ibiza.
The warning level has since been lowered. Nevertheless, the weather remains more than uncomfortable: 19 communities have therefore postponed their school start on Thursday. Residents are advised to stay at home, local media reported as the "Mallorca newspaper".
Storms are common in Majorca at the end of summer: The phenomenon is called "gota fria", or "cold drop". Strongly fluctuating temperatures between sea and air lead to heavy thunderstorms.

Also, the water pants seen in front of Palma are not uncommon. But the two-year-old holidaymakers in Majorca have not yet seen two at once.
In the past year, there was a flood disaster in the wake of the storm: In heavy rains in early October, accumulated a lot of water in the mountains and crashed into the valley. 13 people died.
